Independents often screen more closely than large chains, because a single loss represents a much larger share of their fleet.

What the operator is looking at
- Licence validity and class: the licence must be valid and cover the vehicle being rented.
- Suspensions: generally the most significant item.
- Recent convictions, particularly serious moving violations.
- Current demerit points, read as an overall indicator.

Check before you book, not after
Rental policies differ enough between companies that the same driver can be declined by one and accepted by another without difficulty. The trouble is that you usually find out at the counter, once travel is booked and alternatives are limited.
If you fall into one of the categories above, two things are worth doing in advance: ask the operator directly whether a driving record is required, and order your drivers abstract online so you know what it says before the counter does.
If your record is not spotless
An imperfect record does not automatically mean refusal. Operators weigh what the entries are, how recent they are and what is being rented. A minor conviction from two years ago is treated very differently from a recent suspension.
